Embracing Uncertainty through Yoga and Sobriety

In a world where it often feels like there’s no certainty about what the future holds, especially given recent global events, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Each news cycle brings new challenges and uncertainties, making it difficult to find our footing. But as Zach and I have been navigating our thoughts and emotions over the past few days of chaotic US news caused by President Trump and Elon Musk, we’ve come to realize something profound: the lack of certainty in our lives is not a new phenomenon. Rather, it’s a consistent pattern and predictable part of the human experience.

The Illusion of Control

Our brains thrive on the illusion of control, but in reality, we are rarely in complete control of our lives. The chaotic nature of life, compounded by external events, often leaves us searching for answers in places that may not exist. So, what can we do right now? How do we cope with this uncertainty about what’s going to happen next in our country, and what strategies can we adopt to move forward?

Embrace Sobriety

The only thing that allows me to continually choose healthy coping strategies is sobriety. This is non-negotiable for me. I’ve been blessed not to feel tempted to turn back to alcohol for many years, but I understand how stress and anxiety can lead some individuals to seek temporary relief through substances. While drinking or drugging might seem like a viable solution in the moment, I firmly believe it won’t contribute to long-term well-being. A clear mind allows us to face challenges with resilience and clarity. Back when I drank to cope with stress almost every time I felt stress, I usually just added to my problems. I would temporarily numb my stress, and then wake up the next day with a hangover, which was a whole new problem to deal with.

Absorb Yogic Wisdom

Turning back to the teachings of yoga, particularly the Bhagavad Gita, provides invaluable insights. Here are three fundamental lessons that resonate with me during uncertain times:

Change is the Law of the Universe: “Change is the law of the universe. You can be a millionaire, or a pauper in an instant.” Lord Krishna reminds Arjuna as Arjuna is experiencing resistance towards his current situation. Life is impermanent, and circumstances can change in the blink of an eye. A reminder that nothing is guaranteed encourages us to appreciate the present moment and be open to evolution in our lives.

Perform Your Duties Without Attachment to Results: “You have the right to perform your duties, but you are not entitled to the fruits of your actions.” This is a challenging concept for many of us. We often act with an expectation of specific outcomes, but learning to detach from these expectations can lead to greater peace. The practice of performing our duties for their own sake, rather than for a desired result, helps to anchor us amidst chaos.

Yoga is a Liberation Practice: The Bhagavad Gita clarifies that the goal of human life is “Moksha” which translates to “Liberation.” What are we seeking liberation from? From anything that binds us, or keeps us from achieving enlightenment, whether that be physical limitations and suffering, mental and spiritual distractions, societal obligations, or our own expectations for results from our actions, as mentioned above. So part of our work as yogis is to liberate ourselves from whatever is holding us back from enlightenment, and also to work towards liberation for others. I believe that as yogis, we must use whatever societal privileges we enjoy to be of service to those that have less to us. If people are struggling to feed themselves, to enjoy basic human rights, etc., then they will be significantly hindered from working towards enlightenment in this lifetime. First we must be of service to work towards meeting basic human needs for all beings, and then advance together from there. The mantra “Lokah samasta sukhino bhavantu” translates to “May all beings be happy and free, and may my thoughts, words, and actions contribute to that happiness and freedom for all.”

Build Community Support

Perhaps one of the most powerful tools in navigating uncertainty is the strength of community. Community plays a critical role in navigating uncertainty. Yoga teaches that separation is an illusion; we are all interconnected. It’s crucial during challenging times to unite and support one another. Creating safe spaces for open conversations and shared experiences can lead to healing and growth. Don’t be afraid to pause and rest frequently, to ask for help and to give back to yourself as well. Whether it’s through in-person gatherings or virtual connections, lean into the people around you. Establishing strong, supportive relationships can serve as a buffer against the stresses of the outside world.

Connecting with others not only helps us to find solace but also encourages us to step outside of the world our own busy minds. It allows us to be of service to others, which often brings us fulfillment during challenging times.

Moving Forward Together

As we continue to operate in a world filled with unpredictability, I encourage you to ask yourself: What practices are you embracing to remain grounded? What steps can we take together to foster a sense of stability in our lives?

Let’s lean on each other, whether through shared activities, mutual aid, or ongoing conversations. Together, we can cultivate a sense of purpose and community, even when the world feels uncertain.

In conclusion, while we may not have a crystal ball to forecast the future, we do have resources within us and around us to navigate this journey together. Let’s share our practices, support one another, and embrace the beauty of uncertainty as we forge ahead into whatever lies next.

What are you doing to stay sane and grounded? How can we support you? Let’s open up the dialogue and strengthen our community in these challenging times.
